iBoy. Literary talk (in English)
Veranstalter: Verein Literaturhaus
ABGESAGT!!
Duration ca. 70 minutes; for 6th form students
Tom Harvey, a 16-year-old ordinary boy, is on his way to meet Lucy, the one girl at school he really fancies, when an i-Phone, thrown from the top floor of a tower block, shatters his skull. He was lucky enough to have survived the accident, but when he finally wakes up from a coma he learns that the surgeons could not remove all the splinters from his brain. It does not take long that he realizes that he now has abilities only a superhero would have: he can connect to the world wide web and basically do anything that a smart phone can do. And, even worse, through his brain´s impulses he can send electric shocks and thus render people helpless or hurt them. With his newfound powers he finds out who threw the phone and, even more importantly, who gang raped Lucy. Will he now with his incredible powers seek revenge on the violent gangs that rule his estate and assaulted his friend Lucy, or will he keep quiet? Kevin Brooks was born in Exeter and studied in Birmingham and London. He had a varied work life before turning into a full-time writer. He has won a lot of prizes (f.ex. Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis) and acclaim for his novels. In his literary talk the author will be talking about „iBoy" and his other novels and about topics his young readers might be interested in.
Students attending the lecture should either be familiar with the novel or they should have read the extracts of the book provided by Peter Fuschelberger, Literaturhaus, who you should contact for this purpose: fuschelberger@literaturhaus-salzburg.at The literary talk will be moderated by Monika Tretter-Eßl.
