In seinen Fotografien und Filmarbeiten mit dem Titel „Field Work“  (d.h. Außendienst, Arbeit vor Ort) nimmt der britische, in Grenada geborene Fotograf Dave Lewis die Rolle eines mythischen Fremden ein, der unerwartet an unbekannten Plätzen auftaucht, Einwohner interviewt und sie während lokaler Feste und Ereignisse dokumentiert. Gleichzeitig nutzt dieses Projekt den ethnographischen Rahmen, um Fragen der Identität, der Zugehörigkeit und der Migration zu stellen.

Dave Lewis is a photographer and film-maker interested in identity and the ways in which people feel they belong to a particular place. „Field Work” is a new body of work generated through Lewis’ innovative combination of the role of the artist as a 'stranger', and that of the anthropologist. Two particular locations, Sway in the New Forest in Hampshire and Newtown in Mid Wales, are linked through a process of interviewing local residents and documenting events. At the same time there is a reflexive moment in which the ‘stranger’ mediates on the land he sees but does not understand.

Dave Lewis lives and works in London. He attended the Polytechnic of Central London to study film and photography and was awarded B.A. His work has appeared in a number of exhibitions and publications on photography around themes of race, representation, identity, mental health and anthropology. Lewis continues to work as a commercial photographer, teaching in higher education institutions and to develop new work in long-term projects using photography and video.
